Between the Pacific and a dusty place.
A few months ago I saw on social media a couple of videos of a race that was happenning near by,
in Punta Colonet to be precise, on the videoclip I saw a 80’s Camaro ripping thru a silty turn; obviously
that captured my attention, an oldschool car with bigger tires than it can fit slashing and roosting thru’
silty turns, I mean… I had to check it out… I’m the victim here.
This past weekend was marked in my calendar as the next rally. Once there, what I expected the event to be,
it was, If I try to say it in one word it, then it was... mnmnm… what’s the word im looking for… mnmnmn…
wait, I have the perfect word at the tip of my fingers…
Crazy? not, not exactly… Surreal? close, yet not the word im looking for…
Let me recap to get it right, last saturday my bro Parnelli and I packed a cooler,
grabbed our gear and we headed south. After little bit less than 2 hours drive we
saw the first team getting ready next to the highway. We stopped for a minute
to check in, there we realized this race was going to be full of possibilities…
oh! also we found out that the contingency was going to happen in another location
and a later hour contrary to the official schedule of events, good thing we stopped
to ask.
Rad? Whack? no, not that either.
This is Ismael, he rides shotgun while his uncle is at the steering wheel of this Lexus. He says he’s close to purchase his own racecar to start racing on his own, but his mom still thinks he’s too young. Soon, he said with a smile.
After spending a few moments with Ismael and their Lexus rally-spec we headed to tech where we had to wait a couple of hours until the teams showed up, apparently there was no rush in general.
Once the teams started to roll in, my camera started to make noise (or whatever the hell is that weak-ass-lame-as-fuck sound mirrorless electronic shutter do)
The camaro from the videos showed up first, that’s when we met Carlos, the team owner, who told us that he has only a couple of races with this car, he used to race with an 70’s diesel Mercedes-Benz but the camaro was a more suitable option, he said, I almost didn’t agree but it was running a bigger V8 block, that sound reminded me of the old school trucks, I was intrigued.
Seeing it live ripping while you hear the revs on the red zone was trully something to appreciate.
Wild is the word im looking for, perhaps? we’re getting close…
And then this machine showed up:
A 90’s Acura Integra with witchcrafted UTV suspension mounted in, all tubular chassis with engine rear swap…
Peculiar...
I didn’t want to spend much time at tech, similar to other local race series, tech is more about a late-night party for those involved, but im old and I tend to avoid people so I went back to my hotel room to get things ready for the next day...
The hotel was nice and cheap and our breakfast consisted in 4 carne con nopales burritos with hand-made flour tortillas made at the moment. that food was worth the trip already, we ended up getting 4 more to-go (each) for later once we were in the dust.
The first thing I notice, the background. holy smokes, I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world chasing enough races to understand how good we have it here. I guess that’s one of the reasons of why I’m doing this to start with…
The second thing i notice… the track is silty…
So we had a canvas made of the Pacific, silty turns and cuestionable race cars… I was so in.
A Toyota Supra surfing the Baja silt? a 280 Nissan Z? a few Mustangs too?
Maybe fever-dream is the right word?
The rally consisted in several heats of 3-laps each. Categories were separated by 4-6-8 cylinders respectly. There was also a poker run, bikes and Class 7sx racing on a different 10-mile loop. The rally-spec had a 1.2 mile loop.
“El que tenga miedo a vivir, que no nazca” - It’s how we say it around here.
So, what was the word I was looking for? it doesn’t fucking matter. shit was fun
I feel like this are the good old days I will be remembering later in life. Peace.
E.
So good.
